Palestine, AR Arkansas State Police officials have identified a man they said fatally shot himself as troopers tried to stop his vehicle on Interstate 40 in eastern Arkansas.
Troopers told KLRT-TV they responded to a report of a vehicle traveling westbound from West Memphis with the driver brandishing a firearm late Thursday. The vehicle was stopped near Forrest City but troopers said the driver fled as they approached the car.
State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said troopers pursued the vehicle until it passed the Palestine exit and stopped. Troopers said they approached the car and found the driver dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The man has been identified as 60-year-old Rex Lee McCollum of Grapevine, Texas.
Authorities said a handgun was recovered from the car.
