NEW ORLEANS The Federal Emergency Management Agency is providing about $1.7 million to restore New Orleans Notarial Archives’ records, which were damaged during Hurricane Katrina.
The agency is responsible for filing, maintaining and preserving historical documents, land records and other related contracts for Orleans Parish. Before Katrina, NONA’s volumes were housed in the court building’s basement. During the 2005 storm, the basement flooded, damaging the records.
FEMA’s grant will mainly fund in-house stabilization efforts to restore the damaged archives, including the funding of a temporary workspace as well as equipment, supplies and the associated labor costs necessary for NONA to hire temporary conservation technicians.
