Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville has announced its January programs. The museum will kick off 2013 with a program on rare books that are part of the museum’s collection.

“The Great Reveal: Rare Books” is set for 1 p.m. Jan. 7 and will allow visitors to explore a selection of rare books and other items to learn about how many artists made their living working as illustrators. Library director Catherine Petersen will discuss early 20th century printmaking by artists, including Joseph Pennell, Rockwell Kent and Thomas Hart Benton.

Adults can explore the figure-drawing style of American painter Thomas Eakins as part of the Studio Studies Series.

Classes are planned 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesdays starting Jan. 9.

Guests will learn to draw using some of Eakins’ unique techniques, including photography, grids, speed drawing, and shadow and light creation. Cost is $65.

Adults can also participate in Drawing Explorations: A Close-Up Study of Martin Johnson Heade. Participants will create sketches based on Heade’s botanical series. Cost to attend is $45.

Drop-in drawing events are planned from 6-9 p.m. Jan. 9 and from 1-4 p.m. Jan. 13, and a drop-in studio will be from noon-3 p.m. Jan 12. Materials will be provided for the free, informal sessions, and an instructor will be on hand to help guests get started.

This month’s Preschool Playdate theme will be “Let’s Build.” Kids can enjoy a live performance by The Kiddos, art projects, games and storytelling. The free event is geared toward kids ages 2-5.

A Preschool Art Class focusing on lines and shapes is also planned for children ages 3, 4 and 5 on Jan. 16, Jan. 23 and Jan.

A 360 Discussion on “The Art and Science of Light” is set for 3-5 p.m. Jan. 20 and will feature GE light expert Steve Cunningham, New School assistant professor of philosophy Zed Adams and museum Director of Curatorial David Houston.

Topics for the panel discussion will include light as an art form using science, art, psychology and electrical history.

The discussion coincides with the museum’s “See the Light” exhibit, which runs through Jan. 28. The event is free for members or $10 for nonmembers.

Other January events include the Art Night Out series at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24 and a Trent Tally pottery wheel demonstration and sale from 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Jan. 26 in the museum store. The museum will begin taking member reservations for the forthcoming exhibit “American Chronicles, the Art of Norman Rockwell” on Jan. 21; public tickets are available starting Feb. 4.
