Rogers High Melts Down in Tournament

— At the halfway point of the second quarter, Rogers High girls basketball coach Preston Early asked assistant Blu Green if they were ready for a third timeout.

Rogers trailed only 24-16, but Early felt the game slipping away as Greenwood had scored on its first five possessions of the second quarter. Early called a timeout, but Greenwood still didn’t miss a beat.

The Lady Bulldogs hit eight 3-pointers over the first three quarters, and Lundon Williams scored 22 points as Greenwood defeated the Lady Mounties 74-38 at the 1st Bail Bonds Basketball Tournament at Mountain Home High School.

Haleigh Henson added 13 points for Greenwood, while Megan Hartness finished with 11. Greenwood’s starters didn’t play after the 30-point mercy rule clock started in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter.

Early said Greenwood dominated in every phase of the game. Lady Mounties leading scorer Taylor Strickland was held to nine points on just one field goal as no Rogers player finished in double figures.

“I apologized to (Greenwood coach) Clay (Reeves) after the game because we didn’t give them much,” Early said. “We didn’t represent ourselves the way we want to. Nothing about it was good. They were just on another level from us.”

Williams scored 16 of her 22 points in the second quarter as the Lady Bulldogs expanded a 14-9 lead into a commanding 42-23 halftime advantage. Williams hit four 3-pointers in the second quarter, and the Lady Bulldogs (12-1) had six offensive rebounds during one possession.

“Our kids are playing hard,” Reeve said. “They are making open shots, and they are getting offensive rebounds. The effort is there, and when the effort is there, good things will happen. We are blessed with a lot of good players, and sooner or later we are going to have some runs.”

A bright spot for Rogers was the shooting of Callie King as the sophomore hit two 3-pointers early in the game that helped keep the Lady Mounties close.

“It was so good to see her hit some shots in a game,” Early said. “She has been doing that in practice, and we will need that in our conference season.”

Rogers (8-4) will face Mountain Home today at 2:30 p.m. in the final day of the round-robin tournament. Mountain Home defeated the Lady Mounties 51-47 on Dec. 21.
