— Webb City’s smallest player turned out to be the biggest problem for Springdale High’s girls basketball team on Friday afternoon.

Junior guard Mikaela Burgess hit a quartet of 3-pointers in the second quarter and helped the Lady Cardinals pull away for a 63-46 victory over the Lady Red’Dogs in the final day of pool play action at the Neosho Holiday Classic.

Burgess finished with 20 points, 14 of those coming in the second quarter as Webb City (10-2) closed out the first half with a 17-5 run. She had a trio of 3-pointers in the final four minutes as the Lady Cardinals posted a 38-19 halftime cushion.

“The difference was their guard, that number 15 (Burgess),” Springdale coach Heather Hunsucker said. “She got on a streak of hitting 3-pointers, and at the half they were 6 of 9 in 3-pointers — and we’re playing man defense.

“It was one of those things where you tip your hat to them. They were making shots — tough shots — with us in their face. That did separate the game, and we could never recover from that.”

Springdale (4-7), which was back on the floor after Thursday’s late win over Forrest City, battled back from an early 12-2 hole and trailed 14-10 after one quarter. It was a 21-14 game midway through the second quarter when Burgess began her barrage.

She hit a trio of 3-pointers in a 68-second span and extended Webb City’s lead to a 32-15 margin with 2 minutes, 20 seconds before halftime. The Lady Cardinals went from there and led by as much as 52-26 late in the third quarter.

“We did some really nice things early,” Webb City coach Brad Shorter said. “We shot the ball really well in the first half, and defensively we came up with some big stops.

“Springdale is a really good team as far as penetration. They penetrate real well and get good looks at the basket. They’re a really tough team to defend. They’re not particularly big, but they give us some mismatches. I thought we did a good job of guarding the perimeter.”

Jayvonda Daniels had 12 points and Brittany Jurgens 11 for Springdale, which will close out tournament play with a 2:30 p.m. game today against East Newton County, Mo., at Neosho Middle School. Casey Heger added 14 for Webb City.
