50 YEARS AGO Dec. 28, 1962 HARRISON - A tied-up party line yesterday delayed a telephone call to the Harrison Fire Department. The seven-room frame home of Mr. and Mrs. David Bell was destroyed by fire believed to have been caused by defective wiring. Mrs. Bell said she had difficulty twice in trying to use the telephone to spread the alarm. She said that when she attempted to notify her husband, who is employed at the Arkansas Die Casting Co. here, a voice on the telephone said, “You’ve already notified the fire department. What do youwant now?” Mrs. Bell explained she wanted to tell her husband about the fire. Authorities said they had not learned the name of the person who tied up the line.

Heavy rain slackened Sunday over most of Arkansas, but rising floodwaters forced evacuations, and caused more damage in Crittenden, Monroe and Union counties. A downpour in Central Arkansas let up Sunday, allowing some water to recede. There was no additional flooding in Little Rock, North Little Rock and Pulaski County, although some roads in low-lying sections remained impassable.

A group of rural state legislators has filed a bill that would restore a longstanding system of giving landlords who rent to farmers priority over banks, farm supply dealers and others if their tenants can’t pay their bills.
