Second thoughts

— Losing out has never paid so well

If the 2012-2013 NHL season were to be canceled, it looks like the Phoenix Coyotes may benefit from the shutdown.

According to the Phoenix Business Journal, the $308 million arena deal for Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Ariz., and Greg Jamison - who is attempting to buy the Coyotes from the NHL - could lead to the team either turning a profit or breaking even. The city of Glendale will pay Jamison $15 million annually on average to run Jobing.com Arena, including a pro-rated $11 million for the first season if and when Jamison buys the team.

Glendale spokesman Julie Frisoni said Glendale is subtracting $60,000 per game from the $11 million for every hockey game missed because of the lockout.

The Coyotes have 19 home games remaining after Jan. 14,which is the latest date games have been canceled because of the NHL lockout. If all 19 games were to be canceled because of the lockout, Jamison’s group would lose about $1 million, but the new Coyotes owner would still end up with $4 million to $5 million for a lost season.

“So there you go: If Jamison ever actually gets this thing done, he might be overseeing a financially viable season from the ’Yotes, despite the teamnever having played a game of it,” Yahoo! Sports NHL blogger Greg Wyshynski wrote. “Which speaks volumes about the NHL’s whacked-out financial system, and the, ahem, generosity of the city of Glendale.”‘Reprehensible’

Former Detroit Lions quarterback Scott Mitchell has responded to teammate Lomas Brown admitting last week to intentionally missing a blockbecause he wanted Mitchell to get hurt.

Mitchell told Mike Florio on the Dan Patrick Show that he was shocked by the news.

“It just really hurt,” Mitchell said. “It was extremely disappointing. I’m really shocked by it, to be honest. Here’s a guy I’ve had in my house, I had a big dinner for the offensive linemen every year, he came to my house and ate dinner, I gave my offensive linemen gifts every year. For him to do that is just reprehensible, beyond words. It’s really disappointing, it really is painful.

“When you mess with my family, mess with my livelihood, mess with my health, it’s unacceptable. It’s B.S. I just wouldn’t do it to a teammate. I wouldn’t do it. If Lomas has a problem with me, come talk to me. To try to get someone hurt, it’s just mind-boggling.”

Mitchell suffered a broken finger on his passing hand when Brown allowed Green Bay Packersdefensive end Sean Jones to get a free shot at him in 1994. The injury ended Mitchell’s season and Mitchell said that it could have been a lot worse than a broken finger.
