POORE PAGE: Blessings I Am Thankful For This Season

Writer Proud To Live, Serve In Community That Values Giving In Donations, Volunteering

It’s difficult to imagine how Newtown, Conn., is coping with their losses this holiday season. I am struck by stories of strength, resolve and sacrifice as we slowly learn more about the events that occurred. Staff members did not flinch when danger arrived in the halls of Sandy Hook Elementary School. They did not hesitate. They responded just like I know the staff at any one of our schools would have responded. That is why, during this holiday season in particular, we should stop and take some time to reflect on the things we are grateful for. I would like to share a few blessings for which I am thankful:

• I have the opportunity to work with the Bentonville staff. They are second to none. Their accomplishments speak for themselves. What is most impressive is how much they care about the students they serve.

• I am proud to live and serve in a community that values giving. We may lead the nation in donations per person and volunteer time donated. Our giving is a testament to our community’s heart for those in need.

• We are blessed to have city and county political leaders who truly care about our youth. Their positive actions influence, inspire and support our district initiatives and practices.

• Our city and county law enforcement and fire departments are exceptional in their support of our School District.

• We have a Bentonville School Foundation that continues to grow, impacts student achievement and supports our students.

• We have parents who are heavily invested in our schools. They not only support their children, but also give time and effort to make a difference by volunteering or working through their PTOs. We appreciate our parents’ high expectations for social, academic, fine art and athletic endeavors.

• Finally, we have the best students. I love watching our students learn, perform and lead.

I wish each person in this community a prosperous and happy new year. I am blessed to be your superintendent.

Michael Poore is superintendent of the Bentonville School District.
