— 100 YEARS AGO Dec. 27, 1912 Chief of Police Frank Campbell has issued a warning to the public that the automobile speed law from now on will be rigidly enforced, and that a speed of 15 miles an hour on the streets and six miles an hour in turning street corners must not be exceeded. Chief Campbell said he was giving this warning publicity to avoid the necessity of making arrests. He believes that an overwhelming majority of automobile owners are in favor of a strict enforcement of the law, and declares that the irresponsible revelers must observe it.50 YEARS AGO Dec. 27, 1962

There’s a little quackery in any science and a little magic in any quack. Maj. Homer F. Berry says he’s a scientist. Other people have less kind opinions. But the least that can be said is that there is a very benevolent magic in bringing a White Christmas for the kids during a gray Arkansas December. Berry understands that his peculiar efforts to provide needed rain, or to fulfill a dream of snow, are going to provide a lot of laughter. Yesterday the Arkansas Automobile Clubsent Berry a bill amounting to $336 for 84 service calls. A letter informed Berry that a later bill would be sent for damages to autos insured by the club.

Steady rain kept water levels in Arkansas dangerously high Saturday as about 1,250 people were evacuated from more than 400 homes throughout the state. No flood-related injuries or fatalities were reported. Gary Talley, a spokesman for the state Office of Emergency Services, said evacuations were most numerous in Crittenden, Pulaski, Saline and Jefferson counties.

10 YEARS AGO Dec. 27, 2002 BENTONVILLE - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. on Thursday lowered its December sales forecast, further evidence that U.S. retailers will suffer their worst Christmas-shopping season in more than three decades. Sales at U.S. stores open at least a year will rise 2 percent to 3 percent in the five weeks that will end Jan. 3, based on results through Christmas Eve, Wal-Mart said in a recorded message. The world’s largest retailer previously forecast a gain of 3 percent to 5 percent.
