HOUSTON - Former President George H.W. Bush is in an intensive-care unit in Houston after a “stubborn” fever that kept him in the hospital over Christmas got worse, a spokesman said.

Bush’s spokesman, Jim McGrath, said Wednesday evening that the former president has been in intensive care at Methodist Hospital since Sunday and doctors have put him on a liquidsonly diet.

Doctors at Methodist Hospital had run tests and were treating the fever with Tylenol, but they still hadn’t nailed down a cause, Mc-Grath said.

McGrath had said earlier in the day that the fever had gone away, but he later corrected himself.

“It’s an elevated fever, so it’s actually gone up in the last day or two,” McGrath said. “It’s a stubborn fever that won’t go away.”

A bronchitis-like cough initially sent Bush to the hospital on Nov. 23.

McGrath said the cough has improved, and that the 88-year-old is now coughing about once a day.

Fire yields bodies of mother, 4 kids

OKLAHOMA CITY - Firefighters discovered the bodies of a woman and four children on Wednesday after a predawn blaze ripped through a house on the city’s northwest side, fire officials said.

Sgt. Gary Knight said the victims of the Wednesday morning fire were 28-yearold Jeanine Bonnet and her children: 3-year-old Kara Leon; 5-year-old Matthew Zackary Leon; 7-year-old Samantha Leon; and 8-year-old Natalie Leon.

Knight said 39-year-old Brian Poletto was hospitalized in critical condition from injuries suffered in the fire.

Knight said there’s no indication of foul play in the fire. But the bodies are to be sent to the state medical examiner’s office for autopsies.

N.H. woman held in student’s death

DERRY, N.H. - A New Hampshire woman lied to investigators about her whereabouts and involvement in the disappearance and death of a college student her boyfriend is accused of killing, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Kathryn McDonough is charged with conspiracy and hindering the apprehension or prosecution of those responsible for the death of 19-year-old Elizabeth “Lizzi” Marriott in October. Mc-Donough, also 19, appeared in Derry District Court via a video link from jail, where she has been since her arrest Monday.

Judge John Coughlin set bail at $35,000 and set a condition of McDonough’s release that she live with her parents in Portsmouth.

Marriott, a University of New Hampshire sophomore from Westborough, Mass., who was living with relatives in Chester, vanished Oct. 9 after telling family members she was going to visit friends in Dover and would return home before midnight. Her body has yet to be found.

Four days after Marriott was last heard from, 30-yearold Seth Mazzaglia of Dover was charged with second-degree murder in her death.

McDonough and Mazzaglia conspired to give investigators a false alibi about their whereabouts the night of Oct. 9 and told them they had no interaction with Marriott that night, prosecutors said in court documents.
