— 100 YEARS AGO Dec. 25, 1912 Although Governor George W. Donaghey decided Monday night he did not care to become a moving picture hero, he yielded to the solicitation of Freeman Owens, representing the “Animated Weekly” company, yesterday morning and permitted Mr. Owens to picture him in the attitude of signing pardons. Mr. Owens also will make pictures of convict camps in the state, which will be thrown on the screen in all parts of the country.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 25, 1962

The U.S. Weather Bureau has lost considerable face with kids over yesterday’s snow, as Brad Kennedy, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jon Kennedy, proved. Last night, Kennedy, Arkansas Democrat art director, heard his son on the telephone asking if it would snow any more tonight. He scolded the son: “I told you to quit bothering the weather bureau.” “I wasn’t calling the weather bureau,” said Brad, “I was talking to Maj. Homer Berry (the rainmaker).” “Do you mean you bothered that man at home?” demanded Kennedy. “Sure,”said Brad, “it’s the third time I’ve called him today.” 25 YEARS AGO Dec. 25, 1987 WEST MEMPHIS - State and federal governments distributed more than $125,000 in assistance checks Christmas Eve, and Gov. Bill Clinton said it marked the beginning of rebuilding this tornadotorn city. Altogether, 69 checks were issued Thursday to families who applied for relief, said Mary Ficklen, public affairs officer for FEMA. “This is the shortest turnaround (in getting financial assistance) to this many families in Arkansas,” Ms. Ficklen said.

The National Labor Relations Board sided with the nurses’ union at St. Vincent Health System in its complaints that the hospital system violated federal labor law during contract negotiations earlier this year. But the board declined several other union complaints, including a claim that “agreements in principle” reached with St. Vincent during labor contract negotiations in April amounted to a formal pact. The federal agency made its findings public Tuesday.
