PUBLIC VIEWPOINT: Cards Should Reveal Source

Monday, December 24, 2012

While shopping for Christmas cards recently, I noticed cards containing scripture verses but not mentioning their source - The Holy Bible - by verse and chapter. I suppose the card manufacturers are trying to be “spiritually correct” by not mentioning this information.

It is interesting, however, that they felt these scriptures were appropriate and had value or they would not have printed them in their cards.

When submitting papers during my college years, I was always required to include references for any quotes or sources used.

Not including my sources of information would have been unacceptable.

My mother always said to “give credit where the credit is due.” I believe we need to give God all the credit and glory at Christmas. We need to always acknowledge Him, His son Jesus and His words from His Holy Bible. Only then can we experience a blessed Christmas.

SONA IS A BRIGHT STAR

Northwest Arkansas has many stars and one of the brightest is SoNA, theSymphony of Northwest Arkansas. Their recent Christmas concert at the Walton Arts Center was beautiful and inspiring as it revealed the wonderful talent that we have right here in Northwest Arkansas.

Musical director and conductor Paul Haas showcased the voices of incredible choral groups from our high schools in Fayetteville, Bentonville, and Springdale (Har-Ber) and combined them with SoNA’s own musicians and vocalists to create a program that I would describe as magnifi cent.

Their performance of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus with all the groups on stage was amazing. Added spice came in the formof solo performances by young soprano Cassandra Hernandez of Bentonville and tenor Toby Freeman of Rogers.

My only regret is that this concert will not be performed again this year for others in Northwest Arkansas to enjoy.

Much gratitude and thanks needs to be given to those who have created and kept this bright star glowing, including Paul Haas and SoNA executive director Karen Kapella for their talent and vision, all the board members and, of course, the many generous sponsors who support SoNA and the Walton Arts Center
