Trojans cannot overcome Jags

— South Alabama forward Augustine Rubit scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Jaguars to a 77-62 victory over UALR on Saturday in front of 1,875 at the Mitchell Center.

The Jaguars (6-5, 3-0 Sun Belt Conference) used a 16-0 run over four minutes in the first half to build a 14-point lead against the Trojans (8-6, 2-1) midway through the half.

Freshman guard John Gillon led the Trojans with 14 points on 4-of-11 shooting, while forward Will Neighbour added 11 points and a teamhigh 9 rebounds.

South Alabama, which shot 47.3 percent and hit 8 of 18 three-pointers, trailed 15-13 when Freddie Goldstein hit a three with 11:45 remaining in the first half to start the run.

Goldstein then hit another three-pointer on the next possession for a 19-15 lead, followed by a Rubit layup in the lane with 10:45 remaining in the half.

Barrington Stevens made a three-pointer, Rubit scored again in the lane, and Stevens added another three to finish a two-minute stretch in which South Alabama pushed its lead to 29-15 with 8:38 to go until halftime.

The Trojans, who shot 38.2 percent, committed 21 turnovers that South Albama used for a 27-7 scoring advantage, including a 9-2 edge in fastbreak points.

EL PASO, Texas — Julian Washburn was one of five players who scored at least 10 points for Texas-El Paso, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Miners to a victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational.

Konner Tucker led all scorers with 18 points, hitting six three-pointers and pulling down four rebounds for the Minors. John Bohannon scored 17 points, and had 8 rebounds and 4 assists while Cedrick Lang and Jacques Streeter each had 10. UTEP (5-5) shot 62.2 percent from the field.

Mitchell Anderson’s layup with 11:53 remaining cut UTEP’s lead to 49-46, but that’s as close as the Golden Lions would get. The Miners responded with a 34-15 run the rest of the way.

Anderson scored 15 points and had nine rebounds for the Golden Lions (1-10).
