Mountain Home Holds Off Rogers High

— Mountain Home was perfect from the field in the fourth quarter and the Lady Bombers needed everyone of the shots.

Mountain Home was 8-of-8 from the field the final eight minutes as the Lady Bombers held off a furious Rogers High rally to charge past the Lady Mounties in a 51-47 victory.

Mountain Home (8-2) led by 11 in the third period but didn’t seal the victory until Taylor Williams hit two free throws with three seconds left in the game. Rogers (7-3) missed a chance to tie the game but McKinzie James’ running baseline jumper was off the mark with five seconds left.

“The difference in the game, when we got it to within one shot, Mountain Home executed and hit a big shot,” Rogers coach Preston Early said. “We put ourselves into position to win the game but we just couldn’t close the deal.”

Williams and Katie Kapler led Mountain Home with 18 points each. The Lady Bombers were 11-of-17 from the field in the second half but they also committed 19 turnovers in the game, including two in the final minute.

“We spend a lot of time shooting the basketball, and we had some kids step up and hit some shots,” Mountain Home coach Dell Leonard said “We have to have kids step up and hit shots, and we had that.”

Taylor Strickland was called for four charging fouls, including three the first 17 minutes of the game, but still managed 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Hannah Hawley was also in double figures for Rogers with 11 points.

“I think the charge calls changed the complexion of the game,” Early said. “That was an eight to 10-point swing. We had to adjust to that, and I’m proud of the kids effort in the fourth quarter.”

The Lady Mounties return to action Dec. 27 when they face North Little Rock in the first round of the 1st Arkansas Bail Bonds Tournament in Mountain Home. The three-day tourney ends Dec. 29.
