PUBLIC VIEWPOINT: Cemetery Group Offers Thanks

PROUD OF RESPONSE

The members of the Regional National Cemetery Improvement Corp. send their sincere thanks and appreciation to the many sponsors, donors, runners and support volunteers who made the Fourth Annual Veterans Memorial 5K Race a sterling success.

The proceeds of the race help to support the RNCIC mission of purchasing land adjacent to the Fayetteville National Cemetery, clearing the land and then donating it to the Veterans Administration so that the National Cemetery will have suff cient land to continue to receive veterans for burial.

The all-volunteer RNCIC has been activesince 1984 and through its land purchases has more than doubled the size of the original five acres of cemetery land.

The Fayetteville National Cemetery is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and has been declared a National Shrine, for which we can all be proud.

The race would not be possible without the support of our local businesses who have been loyal sponsors and donors every year.

Special thanks go to our runners and support volunteers who make the race a colorful and exciting time for all.

MERLE R. WILLIAMS

Farmington

Vice president, RNCICAs the mother of a 6-year-old, I was dreading dropping my son off to school at Mary Mae Jones Elementary in Bentonville (Monday) morning.

My heart has been broken thinking of all the innocent children who lost their lives in Connecticut last week.

My dread turned to relief when I pulled up in the drop-oft line at the school and noticed a Bentonville police car parked right in front of the building and a uniformed Bentonville Police Off cer standing inside the school greeting the childrenas they walked to their classrooms.

It’s the little things like this that mean so much.

I’m always grateful for the men and women in law enforcement who sacrifi ce so much to keep our communities safe, but this was especially true Monday morning.

I’m very proud to live in a town where the police department is so cognizant and responsive to the needs of its citizens.

Thank you, Chief Simpson and all the other fi ne men and women at Bentonville Police Department for all you do for this community.

This is one mother who is eternally grateful.
