Shooting suspect set to be returned

— A Fort Smith shooting suspect arrested in Chicago last week will be returned Jan. 1 to Fort Smith, according to the Fort Smith Police Department.

Quincey Haymer Jr., 25, is charged with first-degree battery in the Dec. 10 shooting of Sherron Zanders, 28, during an argument near Greenwood and Grand avenues. Zanders suffered chest and stomach wounds that were not lifethreatening, police said.

Chicago police, alerted to the charges against Haymer, staked out a relative’s home and arrested him and girlfriend Melanie Meashintubby as they left the home on the night of Dec. 12, police said.

Police said Meashintubby lied about Haymer’s whereabouts - saying he had gone to Houston - and is charged in Fort Smith with hindering apprehension.

The two waived extradition in Chicago last week.
