Record number of deer taken in Arkansas this year

— The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission says the deer harvest in Arkansas this year is at a record high with parts of the season still two months away from ending.

The commission said Wednesday that more than 196,000 deer have been checked thus far to break the record of 194,687 set during the 1999-2000 season.

Archery season will continue through Feb. 28 and a three-day holiday deer season is open from Dec. 26-28. There will be a muzzleloader hunt Dec. 28-31 and a youth hunt on Jan. 5 and 6.

An estimated 300,000 people go deer hunting in Arkansas each year.
