Several members of the Legislative Committee of the Arkansas State Federation of Labor have been in session in Little Rock since Monday, drafting a number of bills recently endorsed by the state convention held at Pine Bluff, which will be presented at the coming session of the legislature. The principal matter that has been up for discussion is a mines qualification law and the establishment of a state mining board. Laws regarding a workingmen’s compensation act and child labor laws also are being considered.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 19, 1962

It’s not easy to forge a check against yourself, but a Pine Bluff automobile salesman did it. The car salesman, who was not identified by authorities, was talking to a prospective buyer when the customer asked him to cash a check. The salesman agreed. Then the customer said he couldn’t write and asked the salesman to make out the check. As the salesman wrote, the customer dutifully held the end of the pen. The check bounced. Charges weren’t pressed by the salesman. He is trying to get his money back.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 19, 1987 CONWAY - Charges against the head of the Urban League of Arkansas Inc. will be dropped, even if financial records are released to the Arkansas Democrat a day late. John R. Starr, managing editor of the Democrat, made the statement Friday to Howard Love, president and chief executive officer for the Urban League of Arkansas Inc., during a taping of “Arkansas Week” at station AETN-TV, Channel 2, Conway. “In the spirit of brotherly love, we’re going to let you deliver those records Monday, and we’re even gonna let you off until Tuesday if the auditors are still there,” Starr said.

10 YEARS AGO Dec. 19, 2002

Bus riders told CATA officials Thursday they would rather pay a higher fare than lose their bus routes and asked why a proposed streetcar system has escaped scrutiny while basic routes are threatened. About 55 Central Arkansas Transit Authority customers gathered at an afternoon public hearing at the Williams Library branch in Little Rock to plead to save their routes. Another 60 showed for an evening meeting.
