The pardon of 360 convicts yesterday by Governor Donaghey has created a sensation not only in Arkansas but all over the United States. There has been much criticism and such praise from different sources. The news from Little Rock attracted the attention of the newspapers of the entire country, and Governor Donaghey has received telegrams from all parts of the country. Only 534 convicts remain in the penitentiary.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 18, 1962

Two prisoners walked off from the County Penal Farm Friday but returned about 3 hours later. The prisoners, Robert Michael Daugherty and Kenneth Warren Wynn, changed their mind about escaping when they reached a cafe on Highway 10 approximately two miles from the farm. Warden M. L. Cherry said the men telephoned from the cafe and said they were returning. He said he did not plan to prosecute them for the escape.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 18, 1987

Rebuffed for two months, the Arkansas Democrat will be allowed to review all Pulaski County Head Start records Monday, the attorney for the program’s sponsor said Thursday. Zimmery Crutcher Jr., attorney for the Urban League of Arkansas Inc., which sponsors the Head Start program, made the announcement after consultation with Howard Love, league president and chief executive officer.

10 YEARS AGO Dec. 18, 2002

A day after a national group gave Arkansas’ economy failing grades, Gov. Mike Huckabee touted a report from an Alabama magazine that said Arkansas had the “best business climate in the South.” “The proof of the pudding is in the taste,” Huckabee said at a news conference Tuesday. “The fact is,across America those who have taken a bite of Arkansas have decided it’s a great place.” Huckabee pointed to the report as an example of “what’s taking place in raw, objective terms,” and said other, less positive reports were “not based on anything other than subjective material.”
