Lady Pirates Go On Attack

Greenland Turns Up Pressure

— Greenland point guard Anna Rogers listened to her coach and attacked the basket.

Meanwhile, Kelsey Vaughn did exactly what Greenland coach Alan Barton wanted by getting to the free-throw line against Farmington on Monday.

Figuring the Lady Pirates were close to being in the bonus, Barton told his players to be more aggressive down the stretch. The hard-nosed approach worked as Rogers and Vaughn combined to hit five free throws to break a 57-57 tie and lead Greenland to a 63-59 win over Farmington at Dee Lee Gymnasium.

“I just told them when they got their moment to attack it and let’s go to the free-throw line,” Barton said. “We’re a good free-throw shooting team. We shoot 84 percent.

“It’s just the teams that we’ve played are shooting twice as many free throws as we are.”

Rogers scored a team-high 21 points for Greenland (3-7), and she seemed to counter every time Farmington sophomore Kristi Duchanois attempted to spark a rally. Duchanois finished with a game-high 25 points, including 16 in the second half to help the Lady Cardinals (9-2) erase a 40-28 midway through the third quarter.

“We’re pretty disappointed right now in our defensive effort. We think we’re a better defensive team than what we showed,” Farmington coach Brad Johnson said. “But you’ve got to give a lot of credit to them.

“They did exactly what they needed to do to win a basketball game.”

Duchanois drained a 3-pointer with 2 minutes, 31 seconds remaining to tie the score at 55-55, and Haley Maxwell (17 points) hit a jumper 21 seconds later to again tie the game following a Rogers layup. That’s when the Lady Pirates went on the attack.

Vaughn made 3-of-4 free-throw attempts during a 44-second stretch, and Rogers hit two more with 15 seconds remaining to give Greenland a bit of breathing room with a 62-57 lead. At the same time, Kari Scott provided the Lady Pirates with an inside presence with 16 points.

“I’m really proud of the girls’ effort. Anna did a great job,” Barton said. “Kari Scott, really? I mean, she had 16 points.

“If my post player can do that with Anna and got the shooters on the outside, things look good for the Pirates.”

Josh Mueller and Barrett Oxford scored 12 points each as Farmington jumped out to a 20-point lead on Greenland in the first quarter and got the mercy rule implemented after taking a 65-21 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals (7-3) got off to a fast start as they led 28-8 after the first quarter and added to it by holding the Pirates (0-7) to only four points in the second quarter.

“I thought we did a good job offensively establishing points in the paint. I think our first eight or 10 points were in the paint,” Farmington coach Beau Thompson said. “And then after that we got wide-open shots from the arc and made most of them in the first half.”

Junior Calvin Giddens was the only Greenland player to score in double figures with 10 points.
