Board Considers Zone Changes

Monday, December 17, 2012

— The Bentonville School Board will review and possibly approve new attendance boundaries for elementary and junior high students at a meeting tonight.

More than 1,000 students could be impacted by proposed zone changes, district officials have said.

Changes are needed because of the opening of a new junior high school along with elementary school additions, said Superintendent Michael Poore.

“We hadn’t really planned on doing an elementary boundary until we had a larger than anticipated population growth this year,” Poore said. “Because of that, we decided to add on to these schools.”

Mary Ley, district communications director, said there was increase of 209 students at the elementary level — from 6,071 — in 2011.

The board approved building four new classrooms at Cooper, Willowbrook and Centerton Gamble elementary schools earlier this year. Eight new classrooms will be built at Central Park Elementary School.

Brad Reed, district student services director, said district officials reviewed a number of factors while drawing new attendance boundaries.

“We want kids to be as close as they can be to their homes,” Reed said. “We also look at demographics, transportation.”

Wendi Cheatham, a school board member, said she likes that administrators have considered growth.

“I think administrators worked very hard and have been mindful of students,” Cheatham said. “I feel like the map looks like it makes sense.”

Reed previously said 559 seventh-graders will be impacted if proposed junior high boundaries are approved. More than 340 of those students will go to the new junior high school under construction on Gamble Boulevard.

Also, 67 students at Lincoln Junior High School will be moved to Washington Junior High School and 144 students at Washington will be moved to Lincoln.

The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. in the Bentonville School District Administration Building at 500 Tiger Blvd.
