Arkansas State comes up short again

— Trailing by 10 points at half time, Arkansas State cut Missouri State’s lead to two points early in the second half.

That was as close as it would get.

The Red Wolves made only five shots the rest of game, and the cold shooting doomed ASU in an 83-60 loss Saturday in front of 2,285 at JQH Arena.

The Red Wolves (2-7) haven’t won on the road in five tries this season.

“We were able to overcome that [10-point deficit] by scoring eight points pretty quickly to start the second half,” ASU Coach Brian Boyer said. “We just weren’t able to sustain that.”

Junior forward Jane Morrill scored a game-high 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and pulled down a team high 8 rebounds, while forward Carlisha Wyatt added 9 points for ASU.

The Red Wolves, who shot 34.9 percent, cut into the lead when guard Quinishia McDowell made a three-pointer and guard Andi Watson’s baskets off back-to-back steals cut the lead to 41-39 after an 11-2 run by Missouri State (6-3) closed the first half.

But ASU shot only 25.6 percent in the second half, and Missouri State proved accurate from the three-point line, making 4 of 8 in the second half to push the lead back to at least 10 points.

“We had our hands down and they make you pay for that,” Boyer said. “It is just a matter of when you play a good scoring team like this, you can’t give them any margin of error because they will make you pay.”

Guard Kenzie Williams led the Bears with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 3 of 6 from three-point range, and Hannah Wilkerson and Karly Buer scored 14 each.

Chigoziany and LaKendra Marsh led UAPB with 11 points, while Jenis Gentry added seven points.

Alie Decker scored a game-high 19 points off the bench for Wichita State, going 4 of 7 on three-pointers. Michaela added 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, and Darice Fountaine added 14 points.
