— FOOTBALL Maxfield sticks with Henderson State

Henderson State Coach Scott Maxfield said in a news release Friday he has turned down an offer to become coach at NCAA Division I Northwestern (La.) State to remain coach at the Division II school.

“It was a difficult decision, but the longer my wife and I weighed the issue, the decision became very easy,” Maxfield said in a statement.

Maxfield, who is 49-35 in eight seasons at Henderson State, spent five seasons as an assistant at Northwestern State. He coached the defensive line in 1991-1994 and was its defensive coordinator in 1994-1996.

Maxfield was offered the position coming off his best season at Henderson State. The Reddies finished 10-1, won their first outright conference title in almost 40 years and advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time in school history, where they lost to Missouri Western State 45-21.
