Police Warn Against Phone Scam

Friday, December 14, 2012

— Police are warning residents about a phone scam that “promises something for nothing.”

According to a news release, a resident reported a caller claimed to be with Publishers Clearing House and he had won a large sum of money. The caller asked the resident to go to a business and buy a “Greed Dot” cash card for several hundred dollars as a transaction fee. He was to take the card to a “local representative” or mail it to an address.

Police warn residents to never give out personal information over the phone, through the mail or over the Internet unless contact has been initiated, according to the release. Residents should be aware of promotional scams or promises of lottery winnings that sound “too good to be true.”
