— 100 YEARS AGO Dec. 14, 1912 “Outrage” and “burlesque” were some of the terms which a delegation of militant Little Rock suffragettes applied to Miss Martha Russell’s photoplay production of “Running for Mayor” on the streets of Little Rock yesterday. “You have burlesqued the suffragettes,” was the first charge. “I have not,” rejoined Miss Russell hotly. “You might well be proud if you could induce the women who played the role of suffragettes this afternoon to join your ranks.” “But your production was of a nature to antagonize men against the cause of suffrage,” was another remonstrance. “Well, I think so highly of men that I married one,” replied Miss Russell. “Can any of yousay as much?” Momentary silence. “Let me tell you something,” Miss Russell came back. “The trouble with you suffragettes is that you talk too much.” The debate raged fiercely for some minutes and so far as can be learned, no decision was rendered.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 14, 1962 HOT SPRINGS - Many citizens of this gamblingconscious resort were beaming today over thefederal report card issued at Fort Smith yesterday. A federal grand jury adjourned yesterday after three days of investigation to determine if Hot Springs casinos were obeying 1961 gambling laws. The jurors returned 11 no true bills and no indictments after hearing some 50 witnesses, 21 of whom were FBI agents.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 14, 1987 W.D. “Bill” Hamilton, president of the Little Rock School Board, proposed Sunday a new attendance plan splitting the district into five zones instead of two. Hamilton said the proposed attendance zones would allow children from the same areas to attend the same schools and reduce busing in the district.

Bus riders and others will have a chance to speak about proposed reductions in Central Arkansas Transit Authority services in Little Rock at two public hearings Thursday. CATA is proposing the cuts because Little Rock plans to reduce its allocation to CATA’s 2003 budget, though both organizations are working to find budget cuts elsewhere. Any service cut requires a public hearing before its elimination.
