Old South favorite keeps winter colorful

This unusual weather has some plants blooming out of their normal season, but one group that is supposed to be blooming now is doing just that: camellias, writes Janet B. Carson in HomeStyle.

Camellias are evergreen shrubs that add great color to our late fall through winter landscape, and this year they are loaded.

While there are more than 100 species of camellias growing wild in Asia, with the greatest diversity in southern China, only three (in some places four) species are commonly grown in the United States. Within that group of species, more than 20,000 varieties and crosses have been created by professional and amateur growers, with more introductions every year.

See tomorrow’s HomeStyle for Janet’s picks for the best varieties to grown in Arkansas including new ones that will survive in northern areas of the state.
