Walmart Applies For Most Permits

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

— Walmart made up the biggest chunk of alcohol permits processed last week by the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Division.

The Bentonville-based retail giant applied for beer and wine permits at nine of its stores in Benton County and one store in Madison County. The two counties were voted wet on Nov. 6. Sam’s Club also applied for a permit at its Bentonville store at 3500 S.E. Club Blvd.

Calls to Walmart seeking comment were not returned Tuesday afternoon.

All applications received by Dec. 18 will be decided at the division’s January board meeting. The time frame allows for a 30-day waiting period for public objection to a particular permit, said Michael Langley, division director.

The division mails out a notice of application to the mayor, city council, police chief and prosecuting attorney for each permit, according to the agency’s website. Enforcement agents make a site visit to all applicants to ensure they meet regulations and to speak with neighbors.

The liquor permit is approved pro forma if no one objects and agents find no issues in the site visit. If there is an objection, the application will go before the board for discussion.

The Walmart and Sam’s Club applications joined four others from Benton County last week, according to the alcohol division’s weekly report for Dec. 3-7. Murphy Express in Bentonville, Supermercado La Villita in Rogers, Stop N Shop in Rogers and La Hacienda Reyes in Siloam Springs applied for permits.

The division processed 28 alcohol permits from Benton County businesses the previous week, making 42 permits so far since the alcohol vote totals were certified in late November.
