Tontitown Stakes Claim to Land

Tontitown voters decided Tuesday to annex 88 acres on the city’s northern border, an area that also has been claimed recently by Elm Springs.

That means residents of the contested area, which consists almost entirely of the Churchill Downs subdivision off of Brush Creek Road, will vote Jan. 8 on which city to join. The area includes 23 address points, 21 full parcels of property and 12 partial parcels.

Tontitown approved the annexation measure with 49 votes (82 percent) in favor and 11 votes (18 percent) against, according to unofficial results provided by the Washington County Election Commission. Voter turnout was about 3.6 percent.

Elm Springs residents voted to annex the same area as part of a larger annexation vote on Nov. 6.

Tontitown Mayor Tommy Granata has said annexing the area to his city would even out its northern border. He also said the city would gain about $1,700 in property tax revenue if it acquires the subdivision.
