•–––––CHARLOTTE A. KAUFMAN, 84, of Little Rock had her lifelong belief in the Almighty confirmed when, on December 8, 2012, her soul left this world to be with Him. She had been under the care of other kind souls at Arkansas Hospice, Inc. in Little Rock. Ms. Kaufman was born in Texarkana, Texas on July 31, 1928 to Everett Harrison Logan and Eva Estella Hobson. She was a retired educator and member of the First Presbyterian Church of Little Rock.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Patricia L. Gould of North Little Rock, and by a son, John Logan Kaufman, of Little Rock. She is survived by a son, David Brian Kaufman of Pie Town, N.M.; grandchildren, Peppy and Matilda Kaufman of Little Rock; three nephews, John F. Gould, III of Maumelle, Paul A. Gould of North Little Rock, and Brian L. Gould, of Little Rock and their respective families.

Her professional life was spent as a teacher, beginning in the 1950’s at the Little Rock Public School’s Lee Elementary School and ending decades later at Youth Home, Inc. Along the way, she was named National Teacher of the year in 1962, and later earned a doctorate in education. Her retirement years were devoted to being with her family, the study of genealogy for family and friends, and THE COMPUTER which enabled her almost unlimited access to those things she loved.

Mrs. Kaufman was always mindful of these words of St. Roche, the patron saint of dogs: “They are our friends...our partners...our protectors...ever loyal...all forgiving...to their hearts’ last beat...” The least we owe them is to live a life that is worthy of that devotion.

She lived such a life, a very big part of which included extending support and kindnesses to God’s other creatures, dog and non-dog alike. Therefore, in lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in her memory to the animal welfare group of one’s choice with a first nod to in-state groups.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Oakland Cemetery, 2101 Barber, Little Rock with Rev. Larry Ballard officiating. To sign the online guestbook, go to www.griffinleggetthealeyroth. com.

•–––––ELIZABETH ABELER STODOLA, 90, of Little Rock, Arkansas died Sunday, December 9th, 2012 after a long illness. She was born August 30th, 1922 to George and Margaret Abeler, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Betty was a lifelong music educator and church musician. She graduated from the University of Minnesota and continued with graduate studies in New York at the Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart. She also received a Master’s Degree of Music Education from the University of Iowa. One of her life’s devotions was the making of music.

Betty spent 25 years teaching vocal music in the Iowa public schools and at LaSalle High School in Cedar Rapids, the town where she raised her two sons, Mark and Robert, currently of Little Rock. Her choir performances and Madrigal Dinners were yearly highlights. She returned to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1971 as Music Director/Organist at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. She was Music Director at the St. Paul Seminary for five years instructing music liturgy and directing a choir of seminarians. The pipe organ was her special love. She was Dean of the St. Paul-Minneapolis Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She also held that position at the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City Chapter; the Blackhawk (Quad Cities, Iowa) Chapter; and the Central Arkansas Chapter. In 1982, Betty returned to Iowa as a music teacher and organist until her retirement from teaching in 1987.

In 1988, Betty moved to Little Rock to be near her sons. During her life in the South, she was Organist/Choir Director at Lakewood United Methodist Church, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. Though well past common retirement age, Betty was active with many musical groups, with the Arkansas Bach Chorus and other musical ensembles, and was happiest rehearsing musicians and readying musical performances. She was an active member of the Little Rock musical community and taught piano to countless numbers of students throughout her career. She was also involved with the Organ Historical Society and brought their national convention to Little Rock. She was instrumental in obtaining and restoring an historic organ for St. Michael’s Church.

Betty was a good friend to us. We deeply honor her and remember her for her intelligence, innate kindness, generosity, and fineness of spirit. She has been an inspiration to us all as a singularly stronghearted woman who made her mark in this world no matter what the circumstances.

Survivors include two sons, Mark (Jo Ellen) and Robert (Zabelle), both of Little Rock; three grandchildren, Allison Stodola Wilson (Craig), Robert and John Mark Stodola; and one brother, James Abeler (Sandy), of Anoka, Minnesota.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Little Rock, officiated by Rev. Matt Garrison on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 4 p.m. Following the service a reception with the family will be held in the McDonald Hall Parish Center. Arrangements are by Roller-Chenal Funeral Home, 13801 Chenal Parkway, Little Rock, Arkansas, (501) 224-8300. A memorial fund dedicated to the Central Arkansas Chapter of the American Guild of Organists has been established in her memory and can be sent to P.O. Box 2765, Little Rock, Ark. 72203. •–––––HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Richard (Dick) S. Pike, 79, of Hot Springs Village passed away Sunday, December 9, 2012 at St. Vincent Hospital in Little Rock. He was born October 25, 1933 in Sacramento, California to Chet and Leona Pike. He was a graduate of San Jose State University in 1958, where he earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration. As an alumnus, he remained in touch with good friends from his Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Richard served his country in the U.S. Navy, and in 1973 he married the love of his life, Helen (Pinky) J. Beckwith of Cary, North Carolina. After leaving his service in the Navy, he worked in sales for Johnson & Johnson, and later in business for himself. During Pinky’s 20 year tour in the Navy, they lived in places such as Taiwan, and traveled to many Middle Eastern Countries. They were adventurers, and loved collecting items from the countries where they lived and traveled.

After returning to the states, they settled in California. In 1996, they hit the road in their motor home with their two Golden Retrievers. For four years, they explored our wonderful country, America, including Alaska and Canada. While in their travels, they discovered Hot Springs Village, and soon knew it was the place where they wanted to retire. They moved to the Village in 2000 where they enjoyed golf, kayaking and walking the trails.

The Pikes have been members of Christ of the Hills United Methodist Church for 10 years. He loved to annually attend Manresa House of Retreats with good friends where they practiced silence and meditation. Dick had a flare for story telling that always held the interest of his listeners and put a smile on their faces. One of his current and greatest hobbies was photography. He loved taking trips with a couple of his photography buddies and especially loved taking pictures of birds and animals.

Dick fought a gallant battle over the past twelve months against lymphoma, followed by open heart surgery. While he was strong in mind and spirit, his body was too weak to win the battle.

He is predeceased by his parents and uncles, Bishop James A. Pike and James Fiske. Dick is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Helen J. Pike of Hot Springs Village; daughter, Shannon Pike Harrell of Lake Coma, Italy; grandsons, Max and Niko; daughter, Sherry Pike Lewton of Sammamish, Washington; grandson, Michael.

Dick had a firm belief in God first, then devotion to family. He loved the unfortunate and contributed generously to various charities.

A Memorial service will be held at Christ of the Hills United Methodist Church at 700 Balearic Road, Hot Springs Village, Arkansas on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, P.O.
