Horton in mix for Appalachian State job

— Tim Horton, a former University of Arkansas player and current assistant coach, is among the finalists for the head coaching job at Appalachian State, according to a published report.

The Winston-Salem (N.C.) Journal reported Horton is in the mix to replace longtime coach Jerry Moore. Other candidates include interim Appalachian State Coach Scott Satterfield, Virginia Tech assistant Mike O’Cain, Wake Forest assistant Lonnie Galloway and former North Carolina assistant John Shoop.

Horton and other Arkansas assistant coaches have been informed by Arkansas Coach Bret Bielema that they might have an opportunity to be retained on his first staff with the Razorbacks.

Horton, 45, could not be reached for comment.

He has previous experience at Appalachian State, a member of the Football Championship Subdivision’s Southern Conference. He spent nine years on Moore’s staff with the Mountaineers, serving as receivers and tight ends coach in 1990-1992, then running backs coach and recruiting coordinator in 1993-1998.

Horton has served the past six seasons at his alma mater as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator under Houston Nutt, Bobby Petrino and John L. Smith. He is credited with helping keep together Arkansas’ signing class during the transition from Nutt to Petrino, a group in 2008 that featured Joe Adams, Jarius Wright, Greg Childs, Chris Gragg, Tyler Wilson and Dennis Johnson.
