Conway converts late FTs

— Conway won a late free-throw shooting contest Tuesday night.

The Wampus Cats made 11 of 12 free throws in the final 3:54 to pull away from Rogers for a 61-56 victory in a nonconference game at King Arena.

The game was tied 50-50 with 4:33 left, but Rogers was just 1 of 6 from the field and 4 of 6 from the free-throw line the rest of the way.

Tim Boyd led Conway with 21 points, making 9 of 11 free throws. Adrian Moore finished with 14 points and the freshman was 3 of 4 from the line in the final two minutes.

“We wanted to keep the ball in Adrian and Tim’s hands because they are pretty good from the line,” Conway Coach James Bates said. “I thought Rogers played well, but we found enough gaps in the lane to score enough points to win. We are pretty happy we won one.”

Rogers led 39-34 early in the second half, but Conway used an 8-0 run the final two minutes of the third quarter to take a 46-41 lead. Rogers tied the game at 50-50 on a layup by Joe Adams with 4:33 left in the game, but Conway converted at the line to pull away.

Hunter Hill led Rogers with 18 points and Keifer Holt added 11. Adams scored a season-high 10 points.

“I’m very proud of my guys,” Rogers Coach Wayne Herren said. “They fought hard and they competed hard. Hunter has been shooting extremely well and I thought Joe Adams was a big plus for us. Joe played a lot of minutes.”

Conway opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run for a 20-13 lead, but the Mounties hit four three-pointers, including two by Hill, to take a 32-30 lead at halftime. Rogers hit 7 of 10 three-pointers in the first half, but the Mounties didn’t make a three-pointer the last 14 minutes.
