Reader Enjoys Grisham’s Columns

Of late, I fi nd myself rising early in the morning to retrieve my paper from the driveway. Like the rest of our community, I have been captivated by the news of our new head football coach. Thank you for the fi ne reporting.

I admit, however, to a guilty pleasure. I look fi rst to the editorial page, hoping to fi nd a letter tothe editor that includes the words “Lowell Grisham.” Frequently, I am not disappointed.

I read these letters for two reasons. First, they illustrate that when someone is apoplectic with anger, indignant at the failures of a clergyperson, it is often dift cult for them to string sentences one after another in something resembling rationality or clarity of thought.

The second reason is more important, however. I read them because of how much they endear me to the man. If I had recently arrived in Fayetteville, and had only letters to the editor as guide for where to attend Christian worship, clearly the church where Lowell Grisham preaches would be my first choice. A clergyman so frequently in the wrong, so often erroneously on the side of social justice, thepoor, the downtrodden, a pastor so vilified for being faithful to the teachings of Christ - this I have to see for myself.

But, if I can’t go hear him in his own pulpit, I definitely will plan to invite him to preach in mine.
