Garden club garners green

Walk A Mile launches with luncheon

The Bentonville Garden Club’s Holiday Auction and Luncheon drew more than 250 guests to the Embassy Suites in Rogers on Nov. 19. The annual event brought in $13,000 that will help pay for the group’s University of Arkansas scholarships.

Scott Eccleston, Crystal Bridges director of trails and grounds, talked the gardeningminded luncheon guests through the four seasons of Crystal Bridges. Some 275,000 plants and 1,600trees ensure the museum’s grounds are in bloom throughout the year.

He told us the landscaping at the museum “is as important as the art ... We are a garden, a botanical garden, art, architecture and nature.”

The majority of the plants at the museum are native to the area, and Scott also suggested a number of them that would grow well in home gardens in Northwest Arkansas.

Juanita Fryer and Marilyn Bogle were recognized at the luncheon for their 25 years of membership in the garden club.

Those helping the garden club gather green included Janet Hendren, Sandy Edwards, Melba Shewmaker, Becky Alexander, Lynne Walton, Betsy Phillips, Kim Mercer and Celia Boon.

Hostesses Denise Garner and Nancy Trammel welcomed nearly 100 guests to the Springdale Country Club on Nov. 28 to help kick off the donation drive for the Ozark Guidance Foundation Walk a Mile in My Shoes fundraiser.

The third annual sale, slated for Jan. 26, will feature some 3,500 gently used shoes and handbags for sale for $10.

Ozark Guidance turns away no one needing mental health care, regardless of ability to pay. Proceeds from the sale help defray the cost of more than $4.1 million in uncompensated care the nonprofit provides each year.

The organization will accept donations of gently used shoes and handbags through Jan. 16 at any Ozark Guidance location.

Those launching the drive at lunch included sale co-chairwomen Jennifer Irwin and Amiee York, Karen Gray, Barb Putman, Kristin Guyton, Diane Shaw, Jeanie Hill, Joe Hartsig, Fanny Long and Art Morris.

The Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter got a boost Nov. 29 at its third annual “fresh stART” art auction. The benefit featured works from Northwest Arkansas professional artists and pieces created by women and children in the shelter’s art programs. Works included paintings, pastels, jewelry, glass and textiles raised more than $16,000.

Those shopping art in support of the shelter included Tina and Jeff Winham, Misti and Malachi Samuels, Meredith and Kyle Brunen, Debra Layton, Jeremy King and Daniel Cruz.
