Orthodontics office opens in Elkins

Dr. Tom Lowder, owner of Lowder Orthodontics in Springdale, opened a satellite office in mid-November in Elkins. The Smile Corral, 2582 N. Center St., is open two days a month, usually Mondays.

Lowder has been in the orthodontic practice for 40 years, and his Springdale office is at 2709 W. Huntsville Ave. It is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.

Kim Billings, office manager, said Lowder decided to open an Elkins office to be more accessible for patients in that part of Washington County.

Group wins ‘green’ building award

Northwest Arkansas-based Specialized Real Estate Group won the 2012 LEED for Homes Award for Outstanding Multifamily Project. The award recognizes ECO Modern Flats, a newly renovated 96-unit apartment complex in central Fayetteville. The US Green Building Council presented seven awards to recognize projects, developers and homebuilders who have demonstrated innovation and leadership in the residential “green” building marketplace.

The awards were presented Nov. 15 at the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, held in San Francisco.

Specialized Real Estate Group of Fayetteville is a real-estate company focusing on the development and management of multifamily communities in Northwest Arkansas and is a leading developer of “green” multifamily projects in Arkansas.

Plant, workers raise cash for class

The Superior Industries plant in Rogers and its employees donated money to a Westside Elementary class to be used to purchase a smart board.

Workers raised $2,088, with the company matching the funds for the Rogers classroom. The classroom is used by the school’s special-needs students, and the smart board will help with learning and development.

Larry Goodall, Superior’s corporate director for human resources, said employees held several fundraisers, which included some workers getting pies thrown at their faces.

He said the company wanted to accomplish two things with the fundraiser: raising awareness for the specialneeds children within the public-school system and being a good community citizen.

The automotive aluminum wheel-maker, based in Van Nuys, Calif., has its only U.S. operations in Fayetteville and Rogers. Superior has 560 employees in the Rogers plant, which opened in 1989.
