— 100 YEARS AGO Dec. 8, 1912

The State Museum Association held a brief meeting yesterday afternoon in its room at the old statehouse, at which the question of preserving the old building was discussed. Representative Ray of White county made a short talk, in which he pledged his support to any measure favoring the preservation of the old building. John H. Page, commissioner of agriculture, expressed himself in favor of the proposition and urged that the building be utilized as the headquarters for the permanent exhibits of the resources of the state.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 8, 1962

CLARKSVILLE - The Coal Hill (Johnson County) City Council has established a 10 p.m. curfew for youths under 19 years of age and Herschell Hill has been appointed marshal to enforce the order. Earl Sullivan, an alderman, said the council took the action after repeated reports that children as young as 11 years old were out late without adult supervision. He also said there was a high rate of truancy and said the council hoped the curfew would correct the situation.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 8, 1987

FOUNTAIN HILL - Two Fountain Hill teachers suspended last week for refusing to order their students to write letters to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev were back in school Monday. Kaye Hammil and Jane Graves were suspended with pay Wednesday by Fountain Hill School Superintendent Joseph L. Lindsey for “insubordination.” The teachers said Lindsey had ordered them to have the students either write letters or sign their names to form letters and turn them in. The letters were to be sent to the office of Sen. David Pryor, D-Ark., as part of Pryor’s effort to persuade Gorbachev to visit Arkansas.

10 YEARS AGO Dec. 8, 2002

Socks, who gained fame as a mischievous presidential pet during Bill Clinton’s eight years in the White House, returned to his first home Saturday as the grand marshal of the 2002 Little Rock Big Jingle Jubilee Holiday Parade. Socks is the first animal to lead the 14-year-old Christmas parade, which ended at the Arkansas State Capitol with a tree lighting ceremony.
