Cheers permeated from the visitor’s locker room and for good reason.

Scoring more points in the fourth quarter than in the first three quarters combined, Huntsville came back to defeat Farmington 43-34 on Friday.

“We got outplayed in the fourth quarter,” Farmington girls basketball coach Brad Johnson said. “We didn’t do a good job taking care of the basketball. Defensively, we kind of let go of the rope and put them on the free-throw line, let them get some easy looks without the clock running.

“That’s the recipe for letting somebody coming back.”

Farmington (7-1) took the lead in the beginning of the first quarter and held onto it until the fourth.

“They outcoached us the first half,” Huntsville coach Charles Berry said.

With a dominating defense and an efficient offense in the final minutes, Huntsville (6-2) came roaring back with 4 minutes, 45 seconds remaining and took a 30-31 lead.

In contrast, the first half was slow for Huntsville, scoring just three points in the second quarter.

“They did a great job on us defensively the first half,” Berry said. “They just outpressured us.”

But the tables turned in the final quarter when Huntsville held Farmington to six points and delivered the Lady Cardinals their first loss of the season.

“Sometimes you can gain as much from a loss as a win,” Johnson said. “We’re not going to let one loss derail us.”

The impressive fourth-quarter run came after the Lady Eagles seemed to lose some confidence when their leading scorer was ejected from the game. With just under two minutes left in the third quarter, Rose Robinson elbowed opposing player Kaci Sigmon and was subsequently forced to take a seat the rest of the game.

Berry said he was impressed with how his team responded to one of its senior leading scorers being sidelined.  Robinson had 10 points in the nearly three quarters she played.

“That is a big win for us,” Berry said. “We met a lot of adversity. We were down seven, had our leading scorer out of the game and we were able to come back and win.”

Farmington (4-3): Mueller 13, Brackett 11, Garner 10, Stevens 6, Ryan 4, Dellett 3, Hollingsworth 3.
