Former clerk candidate reaches settlement with county over firing

Ann Upton, a former Washington County employee and county clerk candidate, settled her dispute with the county ahead of a firing appeal hearing that was scheduled for 5 p.m. today, according to a news release.
"Ann's record now reflects that she has resigned, furthermore, she has been granted two month's severance pay, mainly due to her long time employement with the County, the vast majority of which was in good standing," the news release from George Butler, county attorney, stated.
Upton had been fired from her IT job with the county after her unsuccessful campaign for county clerk. Her supervisor, John Adams, said she had asked for public circuit court records about a colleague who had been arrested, and cited a violation of trust and confidentiality in her termination report.
"Though both sides still maintain their positions are correct, the County felt it was in its best interest and that of Ann's to reach a fair settlement and avoid potential litigation," the news release stated.
