— 100 YEARS AGO Dec. 6, 1912

Secretary of State Earle W. Hodges has received only three designs submitted for a state flag, and has requested that all who intend to submit designs do so at once. Arkansas is about the only state in the Union that has no state flag. After the state flag is selected about $175 will be expended in making a large flag for the battleship Arkansas.

No matter how much you like Arkansas, you have to live in the state to become a resident. State of mind isn’t enough. That was the official ruling yesterday of Atty. Gen.Frank Holt after Sgt. Mason E. Poinsett of Lexington, Mo., said he wanted to live in Arkansas and asked if he could establish residence before he actually moved here. Poinsett, an Army instructor in an ROTC unit at Wentworth Military Academy, said he wanted to take part in the state’s political and civic affairs with minimum delay. Holt said his physical presence was required before doing so.

An Alexander evangelistSaturday denounced a plan to provide free contraceptives to teen-agers and called Gov. Bill Clinton “a symptom of the destruction of the family.” The Rev. Michael Dixon, 47, lambasted Clinton for his support this week of Dr. Joycelyn Elders, director of the state Department of Health. Ms. Elders said Tuesday the department should provide free contraceptives to sexually active teens. “I object to (Clinton’s) giving free abortions and contraceptives to our children because he’s destroying parental authority,” said Dixon, who telephoned the Arkansas Democrat to “blow off some steam about this matter.” 10 YEARS AGO Dec. 6, 2002 BENTON - Saline County Judge Lanny Fite believes he’s found a prescription to temporarily cure the ills that have long-plagued the county jail. He has negotiated the purchase of the old Smith-Caldwell Drug Store about a block north of the courthouse with the intent of moving the sheriff’s offices there and freeing space for nearly 20 inmates in the overcrowded jail. Saline County is under state order to improve its 18-year-old jail or face possible closure.
