College To Review Contract

NorthWest Arkansas Community College’s next president could be paid the highest salary allowed by the state if her proposed contract is approved during a special meeting today.

Evelyn Jorgenson could start on July 1 making $176,826 annually. Becky Paneitz will retire June 30 at the same salary.

The Arkansas Office of Personnel Management sets a limit on what higher education employees in the state can make. Six percent of each institution’s staff can make 25 percent more than the determined salary amount.

The president’s position for NorthWest Arkansas Community College is set at $176,826 with a 25 percent increase.

Jorgenson could also receive an annual housing allowance of $18,000 along with an annual entertainment allowance of $30,000, according to the proposed contract.

Paneitz receives a $4,800 annual housing allowance and $12,000 for entertainment, according to her contract.

A vehicle for business and personal use will be provided by NorthWest Arkansas Community College Foundation, Jorgenson’s proposed contract states.

Steven Hinds, college executive director of public relations and marketing, said the contract is still a draft.

“There is a possibility that the board could make changes during its meeting,” Hinds said.

The NorthWest Arkansas Community College Board of Trustees is expected to review the contract in executive session today, Hinds said. The board also is expected to return and vote on the contract in public.

Alex Vasquez, board chairman, said he is excited to be at this point in the president’s search. He is hopefully the board will approve the contract today.

“I look forward to a very smooth transition time,” Vasquez said. “I appreciate very much Dr. Paneitz’s continued service at the college and her putting the interest of the college first and giving the board and the college sufficient time to name the next president.”

Jorgenson’s contract is set for renewal on June 30, 2013. It also states she can receive an increase in pay at any time.

Jorgenson will be the third president to run the college. Bob Burns was the first. He retired in 2002 with a salary of $110,650.
