Rogers Hires Assistant Principal

— Kathryn Mays will be assistant principal at Northside Elementary School when classes start back after winter break.

The Rogers School Board met Monday night to fill the position. Mays, a fifth-grade teacher at Lowell Elementary School, is in her 11th year with the district. She said she looks forward to meeting parents and students at Northside.

“I’m very excited,” Mays said.

Her classroom experience, especially as the district began implementing Common Core standards in grades three through eight this year, will help her support teachers, Mays said.

“I think it’s going to be a positive,” she said.

Jade House, current Northside assistant principal, also came to the school from Lowell. House resigned to move with her husband to the Fort Worth, Texas, area. Her last day at the school will be Dec. 21.

Mays will do well as assistant principal, House said.

“Northside is my family so it’s hard to go,” House said.

The board accepted House’s resignation at their Nov. 20 meeting.

Mays was voted the 2011-12 Lowell Teacher of the Year by her colleagues, according to a district news release. She has been co-chairwoman of Rogers’ Personnel Policies Committee for four years and is a graduate of the district’s leadership academy program. She coordinates Lowell’s Padres program and family literacy night at the school.

Mays holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in teaching from the University of Arkansas and is licensed as a building-level administrator.
