Controlled Burn Postponed At Dam

— High humidity and unfavorable wind have postponed a controlled burn later this week at the Loch Lomond Dam.

The Property Owners Association and the Bella Vista Fire Department will continue evaluating conditions and attempt to burn the dam’s brush before the end of February, said Vern Olafson, Lakes and Parks superintendent.

The association will announce the date and close the Loch Lomond Recreation Complex including the walking trail, pavilion, dog park and softball field during the controlled burn, according to a news release.

The association requested the controlled burn because the thickness of the brush is making it difficult to get on the dam for maintenance issues. Also, large roots can loosen the soil, weakening the dam and causing erosion, Olafson said. Controlled burns also improve vegetative growth, he said.
