— 100 YEARS AGO Dec. 2, 1912

One of the largest and most important realty deals that has taken place on the Argenta side of the river in some time was completed a few days ago, when Morris Altheimer and associates made public their plans to erect a two-story modern building at the northeast corner of Washington avenue and Maple street, Argenta, at a cost for land and building of about $50,000. The structure, which is to be completed and ready for occupancy by April 1 will be occupied on the ground floor by an elaborately appointed moving picture theater, also eight storerooms.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 2, 1962

This one was told by a woman who brought her grandson to Erwin’s Barber Shop, 3011 W. Markham, for a haircut. She said their cat had died and the children loved it so much they wanted it to have a nice burial. So the grandmother obtained a box and some Christmas wrapping and fixed it up with ribbon. Then they set out to find a place to bury it. En route they stopped at a shopping center to buy a shovel. When they returned to the car, someone had stolen the package.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 2, 1987

Confronted with about equal opposition and support, the Little Rock Board of Directors adopted an ordinance 5-1 Tuesday requiring the use of seat belts inside city limits. The ordinance carries a maximum $25 fine for violations and will take effect Jan. 1. City manager Tom Dalton and Police Chief Jess F. “Doc” Hale, as part of the ordinance, must immediately establish a public educational program to inform the public of the new law.

10 YEARS AGO Dec. 2, 2002

BELLA VISTA - A toll road to serve as a bypass around this retirement community in Benton County will be explored at a public meeting Tuesday. Highway officials have scheduled the meeting to provide local residents with the opportunity to find out how such a project might be financed, and to ask questions and offer comments. If the relocated highway is built as a toll road, it would be the state’s first.
