— 100 YEARS AGO Dec. 1, 1912 HOT SPRINGS - That the Pastors Union of Hot Springs intends to take official action relative to closing the picture shows on Sunday was indicated in a statement made today by the Rev. F.W. Wylie, pastor of the Orange Street Presbyterian church, who said that the fight against the Sunday “movies” would be inaugurated at the session Monday.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 1, 1962

An alcoholic committed to the Arkansas Commission on Alcoholism may be referred to a private hospital for treatment, the attorney general’s office ruled yesterday. The opinion was requested by Hoyle Houser, director of the commission.He asked whether the statues direct that an alcoholic committed to the commission be referred to the State Hospital.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 1, 1987

Reporters were barred and later admitted to a pretrial conference on a lawsuit filed by the state Game and Fish Commission against various state officials. Reporters from the Arkansas Democratand Arkansas Gazette waited outside Pulaski County Chancellor John Earl’s courtroom Monday morning while Earl conferred with the six attorneys involved in the case to see if the press would be allowed in. Earl then came out and said some of the attorneys had objected to press attendance. Both reporters objected to the closed proceedings, but they remained closed for about one hour. Earl then received a telephone call from Democrat Managing Editor John Robert Starr during a recess and returned to the courtroom to advise the attorneys of “all the furor” which had been caused by the closed meeting. He then told reporters they could attend the proceedings.

10 YEARS AGO Dec. 1, 2002 JONESBORO - Arkansas State University officials say they can start work on a new liberal arts building even if the Legislature doesn’t provide all the $19.5 million for which they’ve asked. If the university doesn’t get adequate funding, the plan is to build the shell of the building, doing as much work as possible on the first and second floors of the four-story structure.
