Controlled Burn Planned for Loch Lomond Dam

— The Property Owners Association and the Bella Vista Fire Department will burn brush Wednesday on the Loch Lomond Dam, weather permitting.

The association requested the burn because the thickness of the brush is making it difficult for personnel to get on the dam for maintenance. Also, large roots can loosen the soil, weakening the dam and causing erosion, said Vern Olafson, lakes and parks superintendent. Controlled burns also provide better vegetative growth, he said in a news release.

The entire hill of the dam, which can be seen from the Loch Lomond Recreation Complex, will be burned, beginning at 10 a.m. The complex, including the walking trail, pavilion, dog park and softball field, will be closed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the day of the burn, according to the release.

The Fire Department will provide the equipment for the burn. The Fire Department will evaluate weather conditions to make sure they’re favorable to burn, , according to the release.
