STAFF PHOTO JASON IVESTER -- Rogers Heritage junior running back Brandon Gates avoids a tackle from Fort Smith Southside senior Garrett Wolfe during the first half on Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at David Gates Stadium in Rogers.

— Rogers Heritage held off a late Fort Smith Southside rally to beat the Rebels 20-19 on Friday.

After pulling within 20-13 in the fourth quarter, Southside recovered an onside kick at the Heritage 28-yard line remaining and scored two plays later on a 26-yard pass from Isaac Jackson to Reece Strickland with 1:50 remaining.

But the Rebels missed the ensuing extra point - their second miss of the night.

Heritage (1-0) jumped to a 17-6 halftime lead, but played the final quarter without star quarterback Josh Qualls, who was injured. War Eagles coach Perry Esclante said following the game he didn't expect the injury to be serious.

The War Eagles will face Fort Smith Northside next week, while Southside will host El Dorado.
