2nd District candidate Rule pleads innocent

Posted: August 27, 2012 at 7:54 a.m.

The Washington County sheriff’s office released this booking photo of Herb Rule, who was booked into the county jail at 1:16 a.m. Friday and released at 3:59 a.m.

— The Democratic nominee to Congress in Arkansas’ 2nd Congressional District has pleaded innocent in Fayetteville to a charge of driving while intoxicated.

Herb Rule did not appear in court Monday. The plea was entered in a letter from his attorney.

Rule was arrested earlier this month by a Fayetteville police officer who reported Rule was drifting between lanes and driving below the posted speed limit. A police report says Rule failed a field sobriety test and refused to take a blood-alcohol test.

Rule — a former Democratic state legislator — has denied driving drunk and says he has no plans to withdraw from the central Arkansas congressional race in which he faces incumbent Republican Rep. Tim Griffin.
