— A Bentonville man was arrested Tuesday by Rogers Police in connection with sexual assault of a nursing home resident.

Police began an investigating Lopez on Aug. 13 after he was accused of sexually assaulting a 74-year-old woman who is a resident of New Hope Health and Rehabilitation, according to the news release.

Shane Edwards, chief operating officer for the facility, said Lopez is no longer employed at the center.

“We notified authorities as soon as we became aware of the incident,” Edwards said. “We’d performed a background check, and he’d come back clean.”

According to Arkansas law, a person commits second-degree sexual assault if they engage in sexual contact with another person who is incapable of consent because the person is physically helpless, mentally defective or mentally incapacitated.

Lopez was being held Wednesday at the Benton County Jail while awaiting a bond hearing.
