— BASEBALL Junior Deputy falls to Newton, Conn.

Newtown, Conn., scored five times in the fourth inning to defeat Little Rock Junior Deputy 8-5 in the Cal Ripken 12-and-under World Series on Saturday in Aberdeen, Md.

Trailing 5-2 in the fourth, Adam Bergeron scored on a passed ball after he walked and moved to third on a single by Benjamin Harrison. After Sam Grossano reached on a fielder’s choice and Conner Barrett struck out, Ryan Kost singled to center to score Dylan Champagne and Robert Lombardo, who walked to make it 5-5. Lucas O’Brien then singled off Noah Fowler to score Grossano and Kost to make it 7-5.

Newtown added one final run in the fifth when William Huegi singled to right to score Bergeron.

Junior Deputy scored twice in the first to lead 2-0 when Seth Van Doover singled to score Nathan Page and Connor Cline singled to right to score Van Doover.

Newtown scored in the second when Bergeron scored on a ground out by Harrison to make it 2-1. Newtown tied it in the third when O’Brien reached on an error to score Barrett to make it 2-2.

Little Rock scored three times in the fourth to make it 5-2. Trey Harris singled to center to score Nathan Page and Cline doubled to left to score Van Doover and Harris.

Junior Deputy plays Boyd, Md., at 7 p.m. today.

FOOTBALL UCA holds first scrimmage

Central Arkansas held its first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday at Estes Stadium in Conway.

Bears receivers Dominique Croom, Al Lasker, Brett Soft and Damian Watts caught touchdown passes during the scrimmage.

UCA returns to practice at 7 p.m. today. The Bears will have their second scrimmage Saturday at 3:45 p.m.

FOOTBALL Red Wolves host scrimmage

Arkansas State held an 80-play scrimmage Saturday evening in Jonesboro.

Junior running back Rod Smith led the way with 50 yards rushing on eight attempts. Quarterback Ryan Aplin completed 14 passes for 102 yards. Wide receiver Julian Jones had 76 receiving yards. Don Jones led the defense with seven tackles, and safety Sterling Young intercepted two passes.

“It was good to get out there in front of a crowd,” ASU Coach Gus Malzahn said. “That was the first time we really had our coaches in the press box, and we tried to treat it as close to a game as we could.”
