Sidewalk Work To Close College Lane

— Sidewalk construction is expected to close the southbound, outside lane on College Avenue for about three weeks.

City crews on Monday will begin replacing the sidewalk on the west side of College between Meadow and Mountain streets, according to a news release. The work is expected to continue through Aug. 31. Work hours are from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The lane will open each night.

The sidewalk construction is part of a project that will also add sidewalks with brick borders, trees and streetlights along Mountain and Center streets.

Keith Shreve, assistant transportation manager, said last week the project is estimated to cost at least $149,000. The improvement is being paid for in part using $60,000 that developers of the failed Renaissance Tower hotel project at Mountain Street and College Avenue put up for sidewalks and landscaping on Mountain Street. The city’s share of the project will be paid using sales tax, which go toward sidewalk improvement throughout the city.
