Waste district director placed on leave

— Maylon Rice, director of Boston Mountain Solid Waste District, was placed on administrative leave Wednesday, said Washington County Judge Marilyn Edwards.

"The only thing I can say is yes. He's been put on administrative leave pending an investigation," said Edwards, chairwoman to the the district's Board of Directors.

Rice declined to comment when reached by phone Friday.

The waste district is one of 18 regional districts in Arkansas that provides solid waste management in Washington and Madison Counties. The district operates a transfer station west of Prairie Grove where nearby residents drop off solid waste and recyclable materials. The solid waste is then taken to the Eco-Vista Landfill near Tontitown.

The district, based in Prairie Grove, also works with cities to provide recycling programs for residents to reduce solid waste disposal in Washington County's landfill.

Rice ran for public office this year as a Democrat in District 85 in the state House of Representatives. He lost in May's primary to Attorney David Whitaker.
